TMR Range Road Works in April

Good Afternoon Mt Spec Stakeholders,

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is planning a program of geotechnical investigation works on Mt Spec Road throughout April 2022.  These investigations will assist TMR to plan and prioritise future works along Mt Spec Road, including high risk slopes and drainage improvements.

We are providing Mt Spec stakeholders with early notification of the proposed works and traffic impacts, and seeking feedback to assist with the planning and scheduling of the works. If you have any questions, concerns or feedback about these upcoming works, please get in touch as soon as possible to enable us to feed this information back to the project team and contractor.

Details of the proposed works are as follows:

  • Expected start date: Week commencing 4 April 2022
  • Expected duration of works: Three weeks, weather permitting
  • Works hours: 6am to 6pm, Monday to Sunday (rotating 10 day roster)
  • Works details: Geotechnical investigations including drilling of boreholes to test soil and rock conditions.  The investigations will be completed at approximately 20 sites along the length of Mt Spec Road.
  • Traffic impacts:

Light vehicles

o   Light vehicles will be permitted to travel on Mt Spec Road at all times during the works.

o   Delays of up to 30 minutes may be experienced at the start and end of the day (around 6.00-6.30am in the morning and from 5.30-6pm in the afternoon) while the drilling rig is unloaded and loaded.

o   Delays of up to 5 minutes may be experienced during the remaining works hours.

Heavy vehicles including buses and trucks

o   Due to the size of the drilling rig and width of the road, access will be restricted for heavy vehicles, including buses and trucks, during the Geotech works.

o   Buses and trucks will only be permitted to travel on Mt Spec Road when prior arrangements have been made with TMR. (We have already been in contact with some stakeholders in regards to bus movements)

o   Prior arrangements will ensure that crews can schedule works and move equipment to accommodate buses and trucks.

o   Delays of several hours may be experienced if buses and trucks travel on the range without prior arrangement as the drilling rig will need to be moved off the range before vehicles can pass.

  • Changed traffic conditions: Single lane closures, speed restrictions and traffic controllers will be in place during the works.
  • Emergency services access will be maintained.
  • Communications: TMR will issue Notices to Residents and Motorists prior to works commencing. The QLDTraffic website will include details of the works and changed traffic conditions.

We welcome feedback from all Mt Spec stakeholders about these planned works. If you believe you will be impacted by these works, please get in touch so we can discuss further and provide feedback to the project team to assist with planning of the works. If possible, it would be appreciated if you could make minor changes to your travel on Mt Spec Road to factor in the planned works.

Paluma Dam Spillway Concrete Works – Project Update:

From Councillor Margie Ryder:

Townsville City Council is committed to providing and maintaining $5.4B worth of community assets consisting of water and wastewater networks, bridges, drainage, roads, waste management and spillway maintenance.

Paluma Dam spillway infrastructure maintenance works are ongoing that will see the delivery of protection barrier installed to the foundations of the dams spillways bridge.

Works are now at the stage for the construction of the new protective concrete barrier ‘slab’ that will be poured onto the existing surface. These works will require a convey of concrete trucks that will be using the Paluma Dam access road which will cause traffic delays.

Council will have traffic management in place; however, dependable on weather conditions the unsealed access road to the Dam including the Paluma Dam campgrounds may have considerable delays on the day of concrete pouring.

The Paluma Dam, Concrete Pouring works are scheduled to commence on Thursday, 02 December 2021 and are expected to take one day to complete.

Please be advised that the concrete trucks will be operational 7am through to 2pm. Normal traffic conditions will return post 2pm.

TMR Range Road Update: ROAD CLOSURE TUESDAY 16 FEBRUARY

Good morning everyone,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the preferred temporary day closure of Mt Spec Road for the retrieval of the light tower trailer.

Please be advised that the temporary closure will be on Tuesday 16 February 2021 from 10am to 2.30pm.

During this time a full closure of Mt Spec Road will be in place from Little Crystal Creek bridge to McClennand’s Lookout. Road users may seek an alternative route via Hervey Range Road. In an emergency that requires Queensland Emergency Services to travel to Paluma Village, access will be provided by the contractor.

I will shortly send through a flyer with further details of the changed dates for the ongoing Mt Spec Road Geotechnical Investigations.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information regarding this advice.

Kind regards

Meghan

TMR Range Road Update – February 2021

Good afternoon all

As Meghan is currently away from the office, I am looking after community engagement for works along Mt Spec Road and have some important information to share.

Geotechnical investigations (night closures) rescheduled

Geotechnical investigations on Mt Spec Road, initially scheduled to occur nightly from 8-17 February 2021, will be rescheduled. The works have been impacted by wet weather and the project team has made the decision to reschedule the works to a later date. At this time, TMR is proposing to recommence the nightly geotechnical investigations on 6pm Monday 22 February, continuing until 6am Saturday 6 March 2020 (weather permitting). During these works, road closure times will remain the same as for previous works – 6pm to 6am Monday to Thursday, and 7pm to 7am Friday. An updated information flyer is attached and Meghan will send a reminder closer to the works recommencement date.

Temporary day road closure required next week

Due to wet weather conditions on site earlier this week, an incident occurred at Mountain Creek which resulted in a light tower trailer (being used for the night works) slipping off the roadway and falling down the slope. The incident resulted in minor vegetation damage only and the fallen light tower is not posing a safety risk to traffic or people.  However, a crane will be required to remove the light tower as crews are unable to drag it up the slope due to the risk of damaging the heritage stone wall at this location. To ensure the safety of both workers and motorists, the retrieval will need to be undertaken during daylight hours and will require a temporary road closure of 4-5 hours when the crane is on site and operating.

To undertake these works, TMR is proposing to implement a temporary day closure of Mt Spec Road on either Tuesday (16/2) OR Wednesday (17/2) next week, from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

I am seeking your feedback on these proposed closure times before anything further is confirmed.  If you have any concerns with the proposed dates or times of the day closure, please let me know by reply email.  While we recognise these works will have an impact on the Mt Spec community and we may not be able to accommodate everyone’s travel requirements, the objective is to minimise these impacts and obtain a general consensus from the majority of residents and stakeholders on the suitability of proposed closure times.  Subject to community feedback, TMR will confirm closure times with the contractor and further information will be sent out from Meghan early next week.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as TMR completes essential works along Mt Spec Road.

Please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on 4421 8970 should you wish to discuss anything further.

Kind regards

Kelly Stolz
