  1. Good morning.
A week or so ago, we were “fortunate” to be part of a convoy of 9 going down the mountain, with No. 8 being a tractor/slasher that had only been in the village for an hour or so. We headed down at just under 40kph, when a call came through on Channel 24 UHF for the pilot vehicle to slow down, as the convoy had broken up (supposed to be kept together, apparently). The result was, the speed of the whole convoy slowed to the maximum speed of the tractor going down the range – about 20kph. What should have taken about 30 minutes took over 50 minutes. Flicked the ute over to manual and went down in second – didn’t often need the brakes or accelerator.

What made this journey not so annoying was that we could hear the radio traffic and knew exactly what was happening and why. We have two small 2 Watt UHF handhelds that we use when reversing the camper-trailer in tight spots. Got them out and charged them up, one goes down, and up, with us on Channel 24. Some quick Google research found these two models:

Uniden ADV25 2W UHF Handheld Radio Twin Pack. At Supercheap, on special until 8th February. $169.99

GME TX667 2W UHF Handheld Radio Twin Pack. At Big W (can’t remember if only available online). $198.41

Extremely helpful, and much cheaper than getting a radio installed in your vehicle.
    Linda
