Have you seen the Metallic Starling…?

Calling all Paluma bird-watchers……last weekend I twice sighted small flocks of Metallic Starlings (Aplonis metallica) amongst the rainforest trees in the village (mostly at the western end of Lennox Crescent).

There was no mistaking these birds as Metallic Starlings. They have a stunning black glossy plumage with a greenish and purple sheen and brilliant red eyes. They are a medium sized bird with a longish tail. No chance of a photo as they move like lightening in what is described as ‘small and fast moving flocks’.

This is the first time I have sighted these Starlings in the village, although as a relatively new resident (6 years at end of July) I wonder if other bird observers have spotted these birds on a more regular basis?

My research indicates that the Starlings arrive from New Guinea to breed in Northeastern Queensland in August and then depart again in March, which means they may be busy feeding on rainforest fruits before flying north for the cooler months?

  1. Quite a few have been feeding in the Bleeding Heart trees in our front yard as well as Len Cook’ yard, so it looks like they are congregating around our side of Lennox Cr. Len also had one bird die on impact with one of his windows. It’s very sad to see them hurt like this. If it is a frequent occurrence it might be worth putting some shade cloth over the windows, or some other material to reduce the reflection.

The Metallic Staring is one of a few species of birds that nest in colonies. Many years ago there was a nesting tree halfway up the range road, but I think it disappeared after a cyclone. It would be great if they decide to start a colony in the village!! They are quite spectacular en mass.

  2. Thanks for the information Lynda. Great that you have seen the starlings, but not great that they flew into your windows. Very good excuse to stop cleaning your windows I think! Your sighting, again at the western end of Lennox Crescent, makes me think there are some fruiting trees in your area that the birds are seeking.

  3. Do hope those starlings continue eating til we get back.
    Tres glorious attire.
What’s happening with the weather in Paluma?
    Rain gauge etc?
It’s been raining non stop since we have been in NSW.

  4. OMG! Very greatfull for this post. I had to google what they were. Unfortunately a flock of 12 plus, missfortuntnatly flew into my lounge windows Saturday. Three hit my windiws with force. 2 were laying on their backs when Molly and I went to aid. Molly licked one back onto their feet, me with my hands. 3 was clearly deceased, broken kneck. Molly and I, were watching for recovery signs when a Currajong ( bad spelling ) came and landed for a feast. Molly and I told it ,No Way! 20 mins later under Molly’s watchful eye, they recovered and flew to the nearby tree where the rest of the flock where waiting.

    1. We had one last year who struck a window – it recovered and rejoined a small flock of about 20 who were hanging about near our place. Have yet to see any this year. Such stunning creatures!
