SUMMARY:Workshop on Southern Cassowary and Birds with Altitude
DESCRIPTION:Join with Researchers\, Locals\, Traditional Owners\, BirdLife Townsville & North Queensland and Bushwalking clubs in Paluma Range National Park to help contribute to long-term data on cassowaries at the southern extent of their global distribution and for Birds with Altitude that are vulnerable to climate change. \n \nThe Paluma Range has been part of only one targeted scientific cassowary however no dungs\, signs or sightings were detected (2014). A extrapolated population estimate for the area is 16 adult birds and reported sightings from locals and visitors are infrequent. The Paluma Range however contains 22\,000 ha of potential cassowary habitat with a wonderful walking track network. This project’s intention is to conduct baseline camera trap surveys and provide easy\, ongoing\, geolocated reporting of all cassowary and sign sightings to add to our body of knowledge about their distribution\, abundance\, habitat use and threats. \nAll Locals are invited to the Citizen Science launch weekend; \nFri Aug 25: 1pm Magar Yamba group campsite open. Launch event @ Paluma Community Centre 65 Mount Spec Rd.  5pm Nywaigi Welcome to Country.  6pm dinner by donation.  7pm presentations on Cassowary and Birds with Altitude programs. 8pm organise survey teams and locations. \nSat Aug 26: AM survey designated routes. PM review camera trap data. Self-cater. \nSun Aug 27: AM survey designated routes. PM review findings. Camping optional.
